Biography
Dr. Maha Marzouk Abou-Gamra is an Egyptian Professor of Medical Parasitology at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, with a distinguished academic and research career spanning over three decades. She was born on January 1, 1964, and earned her M.B.B.Ch. in 1987 with honors, followed by an M.Sc. in Basic Medical Sciences in 1992 and an M.D. in Medical Parasitology in 1995, all from Ain Shams University. She further enhanced her academic profile by obtaining a Diploma in Health Professions Education from Suez Canal University in 2011.
Dr. Abou-Gamra progressed steadily through the academic ranks, from Demonstrator in 1989 to Professor in 2005. She served as Head of the Department of Medical Parasitology from 2021 to 2024 and continues to contribute as a member of the Medical Education Department.
Her teaching experience in parasitology spans a wide range of undergraduate students, including those in the mainstream, extended modular, and international programs, as well as students from Pharmacy and Nursing faculties. Her teaching also extends to postgraduate programs, where she serves as a lecturer and examiner for both Master’s and Ph.D. degrees. She also serves as an external examiner for medical students at the Faculties of Medicine of 6 October University, Misr University for Science and Technology, Al-Ahram Canadian University, and Nahda University (NUB).
Additionally, she has participated in curriculum development and serves as a coordinator for parasitology modules, reflecting her commitment to advancing medical education. Her research portfolio includes numerous publications in parasitology, focusing on immunology, diagnostic techniques, and experimental treatments for parasitic diseases such as schistosomiasis, toxoplasmosis, and leishmaniasis. She has supervised multiple M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses, contributing to the development of future specialists in the field.
Dr. Abou-Gamra is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Egyptian Society of Parasitology and Egyptian Parasitologists United. She possesses extensive laboratory and diagnostic expertise. Her career reflects a strong commitment to medical education, research excellence, and academic leadership in parasitology.
